Despite the Benefits, Why Isn’t the Healthcare Industry Adopting Modular Construction?
In his in-depth two-part series, RMF’s Gregory Hudson, PE looks at the benefits of adopting modular construction during a pandemic environment and the importance of modular construction during the pre-fabrication process.
Part one of the series, “Modular Construction: Despite Benefits, Healthcare Adoption Is Slow,” explains that modular construction for hospitals and other healthcare applications is a design concept that has been discussed at great length but has never seen large-scale implementation in the healthcare market. Greg Hudson goes further in depth to explain what modular construction is and its benefits in the healthcare industry specifically.
Part two of the series, “How Modular Healthcare Facilities Aided Pandemic Response,”emphasizes the urgency of adopting modular construction in order for the healthcare industry to be better equipped with the overwhelming need of hospitals and healthcare facilities. Hudson also explains the challenges associated with the lack of building owner interest in the modular approach along with architects, engineers, contractors and skilled trades not being familiar with the process
