North Charleston and Dorchester School District 2 teamed up to build an aquatic center with an Olympic-sized pool in front of Fort Dorchester High School. This is the biggest competition pool in the state and serves as a community resource and economic driver for years to come.
The 54,000-square-foot aquatic center features the only 10-lane, 50-meter competition pool with a removable bulkhead, in South Carolina. It has retractable seating for 1,000 spectators; an eight-lane, 25-yard therapeutic pool; an outdoor patio; administrative areas; locker rooms; and space for a pro shop and concessions stand.
It is not only able to host regional swim meets, drawing hundreds of swimmers and their families, but it also is the home pool for the district’s three high schools and at least one of the Charleston area’s eight existing year-round swim teams.
RMF provided mechanical engineering design including HVAC systems, plumbing and fire protection. RMF's electrical engineering scope included design for the secondary service from the building transformers to the building as well as emergency power systems that utilize emergency standby generators.
