RMF Completes UMass Amherst North Chilled Water Plant Upgrades

RMF has completed chiller plant upgrades for the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

The project began with RMF being commissioned in 2016 to develop a Comprehensive Campus Energy Plan. As a result, upgrades to two plants were recommended in order to connect new and additional existing buildings to the centralized chilled water systems.

Construction of the North Plant commenced in 2017 and included numerous chiller plant upgrades to optimize the system. The equipment in the new plant, specified and designed by RMF, triples the facility’s chilled and condenser water service capacity.

RMF served as the main contractor on the project and served as lead designer. RMF provided mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil engineering services for the project. The project was completed in 2019.

RMF’s subcontractor on the project, Leers Weinzapfel Associates architects, was recently honored with a Boston Society of Architects 2019 Honor Awards for Design Excellence and a 2019 AN Best of Design Awards.
