Project Milestone on $80M Steam Plant at Hill AFB
A new temporary boiler plant for the Hill Air Force Base steam plant renovation was recently constructed in under 90 days.
An exciting milestone has been reached at Hill Air Force Base, UT. Completed in under 90 days, a new temporary boiler plant for the steam plant renovation is ready to serve Hill AFB. The installation marks a pivotal moment in the construction of the $80M boiler plant project, as it takes the existing boilers with high emissions offline and significantly reduces the base's environmental footprint.
RMF is the designer of record for the steam plant renovation, which sits between the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake in Davis County, Utah.
The temporary boiler plant includes three boilers totaling 168,000 PPH installed capacity and was designed to support the campus while the permanent plant is being renovated. The modernization will replace eight watertube boilers with five new ultra-low NOx 50MMBH boilers, each with a 49,000 PPH output. In addition, support systems including fully redundant deaerators, plant controls, surge tank, fuel oil and ventilation are being replaced during construction. Strategic phasing is required for the boiler replacement within the existing plant to maintain steam production for operating requirements. The existing building, constructed in multiple phases over the past 80 years, is also undergoing full-scale seismic upgrades to provide reliable operation into the future.
The temporary system installation marks a step forward in the project, which is one of many collaborations in the longstanding design/build partnership between RMF Engineering and Greenland Enterprises. This design/build project is managed by SJGV, a joint venture between SAW Contracting and Greenland Enterprises.
