UNC REX Healthcare

Cancer Center

The new Cancer Center allowed UNC Rex to double the space dedicated to cancer care, in response to a rising number of cancer patients.

The four-story 142,000 SF outpatient-focused facility provides medical oncology, pharmacy, lab, radiation oncology and support services. A new “Quality of Life Clinic” offers a variety of support services for patients, including behavioral health care, palliative care, massage therapy, and holistic treatment. The building contains three linear accelerators, one high dose rate brachytherapy lab, x-ray rooms, infusion bays and a compounding pharmacy.

RMF provided MEP and fire protection engineering design for the new facility. Two air-cooled chillers generate chilled water at 300 tons each, distributed via three chilled water pumps. Heating water is generated via two condensing boilers and distributed via three heating water pumps. Five air handling units (AHUs) serve the building, with a dedicated AHU serving the compounding pharmacy. Each AHU has a dedicated gas-fired humidifier. A domestic water booster pump helps distribute water throughout the building, and two domestic hot water heaters provide for associated hot water needs. A generator is provided as required for life safety needs.
