UMass Amherst Opens Public Health & Health Sciences Hub
In an online Tradeline feature courtesy of Leers Weinzapfel Associates, details of the unveiling of the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s new School of Public Health and Health Sciences Hub highlight the project’s role in consolidating six academic departments into a single, collaborative facility designed to support modern teaching and research, while advancing sustainability. RMF Engineering is cited for its involvement as the MEP design engineer on the project.
The University of Massachusetts Amherst’s $43 million School of Public Health and Health Sciences Hub brings together six academic departments previously spread across seven campus locations into a single 26,800-square-foot facility designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and modern, team-based learning. The building features flexible classrooms, seminar rooms, open collaboration areas, advising offices, and a double-height commons constructed with exposed mass timber that opens to an exterior plaza used for events and connection to the Department of Kinesiology.
Designed by Leers Weinzapfel Associates, the facility emphasizes sustainability and occupant wellbeing through an all-electric, net-zero-ready systems approach, a high-performance envelope, and bird-friendly triple glazing with deep vertical fins for passive solar and glare control. Interior spaces prioritize daylight and access to views, while biophilic design strategies and material selections, including Red List Free products, support healthier environments. A landscaped bioretention system manages stormwater and enhances water quality.
RMF Engineering is recognized for its role as the MEP design engineer supporting the building’s high-performance systems.
