RMF Celebrates Three Regional Best Project Awards from Engineering News-Record

RMF Engineering, a leader in full-service MEP engineering, recently added three more awards to its already impressive list of accolades

In total, Engineering News-Record (ENR) named three projects on which RMF played a significant role to their 2021 Mid-Atlantic’s Best Projects Awards and Southeast’s Best Projects Awards. The ENR Regional Best Projects Awards celebrate and honor the leading construction projects and the companies that designed and built them in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Independent juries of industry leaders in design and construction from each of ENR’s 10 regional editions judged the projects using five criteria, including safety, innovation, and teamwork.

In the ENR Mid-Atlantic Best Projects Awards Manufacturing category, ENR’s judges recognized The National Institutes of Health NCI Building T30 Cell Processing Modular Facility, for which RMF provided construction quality control and management, commissioning, validation, and qualification. The Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TIL) Cell Processing Modular Facility serves the NCI surgery branch at NIH’s Bethesda Campus and is the first large-scale, fully prefabricated, and modular multi-module cGMP manufacturing facility of its kind ever built in the United States. The program associated with this project involved design and construction of a 13,241.25 SF facility. Interior spaces were manufactured offsite using modular methodology in 10 modules. This project was submitted by DPR Construction, and the architect was Perkins + Will.

For the Southeast’s Best Projects Awards, RMF projects won accolades in two categories: Higher Education and Research, and Energy and Industrial.

In the Higher Education and Research category, Clemson University’s Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business was honored. The newly relocated business school is forward-thinking in its design and inspires and promotes collaboration among students and faculty members through its open spaces, classrooms, flat-floor auditorium, learning labs, and incubator area.

This 176,000 square foot building includes an RMF-designed high-performance mechanical system that integrates the best practices of sustainability and energy efficiency including equipment rightsizing, outside-air-based free cooling, optimum start/stop control sequences, and digital metering equipment to monitor trend energy usage. The project was submitted by DPR Construction. LS3P Associates Ltd. and LMN Architects were part of the design team. RMF was responsible for the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and thermal utility distribution design.

In the Energy and Industrial Category, ENR judges recognized North Carolina State University’s Centennial Campus Thermal Energy Storage Tank (TES) project, which was submitted by Greenland Enterprises, Inc. This project expanded the central chilled water plant capacity with the addition of a 3.5M gallon stratified chilled water thermal energy storage tank to account for the Centennial Campus’ growth due to the introduction of new buildings and loop additions. RMF developed options and comparative analysis for each element of the design. The welded steel tank was sited to minimize grading and structural retaining walls, while remaining accessible and still obscured from primary campus views. The firm’s overall responsibilities included mechanical, electrical, civil, and structural engineering services.

“We’re honored to be a part of these award-winning projects that showcase the incredible wealth of knowledge and skills our team possesses,” said RMF Executive Vice President Tim Griffin. “Despite the impact and challenges of the global pandemic over the past 18 months, we have continued to deliver outstanding work for our clients time and again. While we certainly appreciate being part of these awards, our ultimate satisfaction comes from working with our clients and teaming partners to help deliver projects that are innovative and continue to exceed expectations.”
