Clemson’s New Alumni Center Spotlights Sustainable Design
Spaces4Learning features Clemson University’s Nieri Family Alumni and Visitors Center, providing an inside look into its newest gateway to campus and its thoughtful, sustainable design.
In the Spaces4Learning article, "Creating a First and Lasting Impression with Thoughtful, Sustainable Design," Goodwyn Mills Cawood's Marc Warren and RMF Engineering's Don Zimmerman explore how Clemson University’s new Nieri Family Alumni and Visitors Center sets a high standard for campus sustainability, design, and user experience. The 102,450-square-foot facility consolidates key student- and alumni-facing departments under one roof, creating a centralized hub that reflects the full Clemson journey. The facility was officially opened on April 25, 2025, with a ribbon cutting.
RMF Engineering played a key role in the building’s performance-driven strategy. The team designed and coordinated the building’s MEP/FP systems to work seamlessly within its exposed cross-laminated timber frame, preserving the architectural vision while meeting complex technical demands. One of the center’s signature sustainable features is its electrochromic glass, which automatically adjusts tint to control solar gain and reduce HVAC loads without compromising views or natural light.
To support future growth, RMF also designed a new chilled water plant with capacity to expand cooling to neighboring facilities. These efforts contributed to Clemson’s pursuit of Green Globes certification and reinforce its long-term investment in resilient infrastructure.
Mike Davis, Associate Director of Facilities Planning and Management at Clemson, praised the design teams for delivering “a sustainable and comfortable facility that will be welcoming to Tigers of all ages for decades.”
